Overview

Inaugurated in 1988 on a former coconut plantation, Amanpuri (meaning "Place of Peace") was the very first Aman resort. Designed by Ed Tuttle, its architecture was inspired by the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya, featuring steep, pitched roofs and open-air pavilions connected by a monumental stone staircase. The resort pioneered the concept of the "ultra-luxury boutique" hideaway and radically changed the travel industry by eschewing traditional hotel lobbies for a more residential, spiritual atmosphere. It remains the spiritual home of the "Amanjunkie" subculture and a benchmark for contemporary Thai architecture.
