The story of Il San Pietro is inseparable from its founder, Carlino Cinque, who in 1962 decided to build a hotel on a jagged limestone promontory that everyone else deemed impossible. Opened in 1970, the hotel is an architectural marvel that doesn’t sit on the cliff, but is carved directly into it. Each room is uniquely integrated into the rock face, connected by a labyrinth of flower-lined terraces and a private elevator that plunges through the stone to a secluded cove. It remains the only hotel in Positano with its own private beach and tennis court at sea level, standing as a testament to one man’s romantic obsession with the Amalfi landscape.
