Overview

Opened in 1959, the "Ritz" was a landmark project commissioned by the Portuguese government to provide the capital with a world-class luxury hotel. Designed by architect Pardal Monteiro, the building is a masterpiece of 20th-century modernism, featuring a robust, monumental facade that dominates the city’s skyline. The interior is a veritable museum of Portuguese mid-century art, housing an unparalleled collection of tapestries, sculptures, and paintings by Almada Negreiros and other national masters. It remains the most prestigious address in Lisbon, embodying a specific era of "Mad Men" style glamour and Lusitanian monumentalism.

Why We Recommend

The Ritz didn't arrive in Lisbon — it was born with it. Commissioned in 1952 on the personal orders of António de Oliveira Salazar and inaugurated in 1959, this modernist masterpiece by architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro was conceived as a statement of national ambition — clad in 40,000 square metres of marble, its interiors conceived by French designer Henri Samuel in a fusion of Art Deco and Louis XVI. More than six decades on, it remains Portugal's only Forbes five-star hotel and its most honest mirror. The Ritz sees Lisbon. And Lisbon sees itself in the Ritz.
