Overview

Originally built in the 1920s as a sales office and stable for the development of the Bel-Air estate, this property was converted into a hotel in 1946 by Alphonzo Bell. Set within a 12-acre "hidden" canyon, the architecture is a sprawling series of Spanish Colonial Revival bungalows connected by arched stone walkways and lush, swan-filled gardens. Unlike the vertical luxury of the city, the Bel-Air is a horizontal retreat designed for total privacy. It remains the most discreet sanctuary in Los Angeles, a place where the architecture intentionally fades into the dense subtropical landscape.
