Overview

Opened in 1930 and designed by architects Sylvan Bien and Harry M. Prince, The Carlyle is a 40-story Art Deco tower that has served as a social bastion of the Upper East Side for nearly a century. Named after the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, the building’s yellow brick and limestone facade is topped by a signature green-and-gold glided cap. It became famously known as the "New York White House" during the Kennedy administration, as the President maintained a residence in the tower. The hotel’s soul is found in its murals—specifically the Marcel Vertès whimsical scenes in the Café Carlyle and Ludwig Bemelmans’ only public mural in the legendary Bemelmans Bar.
