Overview

Designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh and opened in 1907, The Plaza is a French Renaissance-style "château" that serves as the cornerstone of Central Park South. Its history is a timeline of New York high society, from the Black and White Ball to its status as a frequent setting for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels. The building is a National Historic Landmark, defined by its white brick and terra-cotta facade, marble corridors, and the legendary Palm Court. It remains the undisputed symbol of Gilded Age New York, embodying a level of palatial grandeur that defined the city’s early 20th-century ambition.
